A Family Legacy
Across Generations

For more than 55 years, Northern Developments has been shaped by people, relationships and a multi-generational commitment to building strong communities across Alberta.

People create opportunities.
Generations create legacy.

Remembering Monica & Paul

A Brother and
Sister Remembered

Northern Developments has always been shaped by more than properties and projects. Its history is also a story of people, relationships and family connections carried forward over time.

With the passing of siblings, and shareholders, Monica Wright and Paul Boytinck, we pause to remember two members of the family whose history is closely connected with Northern Developments.

Monica and Paul’s lives followed very different paths, but both remained part of a shared family legacy that connects Northern’s beginnings with the company it has become today.

Monica Wright

A Life Rooted in
Business, Family, and Legacy

Monica Wright was a devoted mother, grandmother and family matriarch, but she was also a capable and independent businesswoman whose life reflected many of the same values that shaped the family’s beginnings in Alberta.

Born Monica Gunhild Boytinck in Germany, she immigrated to Canada with her family in 1948 and spent her formative years in Fairview, Alberta. Those early years helped shape the strong work ethic, resilience and determination that would remain with her throughout her life.

Monica later built a life in Southern Alberta with her husband, Bill. Together they operated Boytinck’s Department Store, a family business that carried her family name and reflected the entrepreneurial spirit that had long been part of the Boytinck family story. In the 1980s, Monica went on to establish Ruffles, her own ladies’ boutique, where she built a successful independent business around helping women feel confident as they entered new stages of their lives.

Her impact extended well beyond business. Monica was deeply involved in her community through volunteering and Rotary, and she brought the same energy and care to her family, her friendships, her creative pursuits and the place she called home.

Monica’s story is an important link between the family’s entrepreneurial beginnings and the generations that followed. Her legacy lives on not only through Northern’s broader family history, but through the businesses she helped build, the community she strengthened and the many lives she touched.

Paul Boytinck

A Life of Scholarship,
Independence and Curiosity

Paul Boytinck lived a remarkable life shaped by intellectual curiosity, discipline and a deep commitment to learning. Born in Germany and raised in Alberta after immigrating to Canada with his family, he developed an early love of literature, history and independent thought that would define both his career and his character.

Paul pursued his education at the University of Alberta, UCLA and McGill University, where his academic work was recognized for its maturity, research and clarity. He went on to build a distinguished career in academia and libraries, serving for many years at Bucknell University before retiring to Scottsdale, Arizona.

His scholarly interests remained a constant throughout his life. Paul became a respected authority on H. L. Mencken, publishing essays, reviews and research that reflected his sharp mind, meticulous approach and lifelong fascination with the written word.
Outside of his professional work, Paul was equally defined by his independence and individuality. He remained active through tennis, swimming and fitness, enjoyed chess and spirited conversation, and was known for his wit, extensive vocabulary and willingness to question convention.

Although his path was very different from Monica’s, Paul remained closely connected to his family throughout his life. His story reflects another side of the Boytinck family legacy — one rooted in scholarship, curiosity, self-reliance and the confidence to follow one’s own path.

Paul is remembered for his intellect, authenticity and unmistakable “free lance” spirit, a legacy that continues through his writing and the many people influenced by his life.

Part of a Story

More Than 55 Years
in the Making

Northern Developments began in 1971. Over more than five decades, the company has grown through changing communities, markets, projects and generations.

The second generation, including Monica and Paul, represents and important chapter in that history — connecting the people who established Northern with those who would eventually carry its legacy forward.

Today, Northern has entered another stage of its evolution. The company is no longer defined solely by family leadership, it has transitioned into an experienced management era while the family remains connected to the company and its history.
